I Don’t Feel Like Myself Anymore: What’s Really Happening to Your Body After 40?
Maybe you haven’t Googled “perimenopause symptoms.” Maybe you’ve Googled something more like: Why don’t I feel like myself anymore? Why is my body changing so much after 40? Why am I gaining weight when I…
Maybe you haven’t Googled “perimenopause symptoms.”
Maybe you’ve Googled something more like:
Why don’t I feel like myself anymore?
Why is my body changing so much after 40?
Why am I gaining weight when I haven’t changed anything?
Why am I so tired all the time?
Why do I look six months pregnant by the end of the day?
Because the thing you’re actually struggling with isn’t estrogen.
It’s not cortisol.
It’s not even the 15 pounds you’ve gained.
It’s that you don’t really recognize yourself anymore.
You get dressed and change three times because nothing feels right.
You automatically reach for the loose shirt.
You see a picture someone took of you and immediately zoom in on yourself.
You pull your jeans out when the seasons change and hold your breath before putting them on.
You crawl into bed beside the person you love and you’d really rather they didn’t touch your stomach.
And maybe the most frustrating part?
You’re doing the things you think you’re supposed to be doing.
You’re eating pretty healthy.
You’re walking.
You’re working out.
You’re taking the supplements.
You’re trying.
So why don’t you feel like the healthy woman you’re working so hard to be?
That’s the question I think we need to be asking.
You Don’t Actually Want Your “Old Body” Back
I hear women say this all the time:
“I just want my old body back.”
But I don’t think that’s actually what you want.
You don’t necessarily want your 30-year-old body.
You miss how you felt living in it.
You want to get dressed without thinking about your stomach.
You want to see yourself in a family photo without immediately criticizing how you look.
You want to walk into a store and choose clothes because you like them—not because they’ll hide your body.
You want enough energy after work to actually enjoy your evening.
You want to feel strong.
You want to feel confident.
You want to feel like you again.
That’s a very different goal than losing 15 pounds.
Your Body Has Been Leaving Clues
It can feel like your body suddenly changed overnight.
But usually, when I start asking questions, we realize there were clues long before the weight changed.
Maybe your sleep changed first.
Then your digestion.
Then your energy.
Maybe you started waking at 3 a.m.
Maybe your stomach became more bloated.
Maybe your workouts stopped giving you the results they used to.
Maybe your cycle changed.
Maybe your libido disappeared.
And eventually your clothes stopped fitting the same way.
These things aren’t always separate problems.
They’re information.
This is why I don’t want to immediately give you another diet or tell you to exercise more.
I want to understand what your body is responding to.
Is It Your Hormones?
Maybe.
Hormonal changes during perimenopause can affect sleep, energy, mood, body composition, blood sugar, libido and more.
But here’s the thing…
Your hormones don’t live in their own little box.
They interact with your stress.
Your digestion.
Your sleep.
Your blood sugar.
Your inflammation.
Your nutrition.
Your movement.
That’s why I don’t look at weight gain and automatically say, “It’s menopause.”
And I don’t look at exhaustion and immediately hand you a supplement.
I get curious.
This Is Where I Want You to Get Curious Too
Instead of asking:
“How do I lose this weight?”
Start asking:
“What has changed in my body?”
How are you sleeping?
Are you waking feeling rested?
What’s happening with your energy throughout the day?
Are you bloated?
Are your bowels regular?
Are you eating enough protein?
Are you eating enough, period?
How are you recovering from your workouts?
What’s filling your stress bucket right now?
Has your cycle changed?
Has your libido changed?
When did you first notice that you stopped feeling like yourself?
You don’t need to diagnose yourself.
You’re looking for clues.
More Effort Isn’t Always the Answer
This was something I had to learn myself.
For years, I believed more was better.
More cardio.
More workouts.
Eat less.
Burn more.
Push harder.
So when my body stopped responding, my instinct was to do more of what had always worked.
That’s what I see women doing every day.
If five workouts aren’t working, maybe six will.
If 1,500 calories aren’t working, maybe 1,200 will.
If 8,000 steps aren’t working, let’s make it 12,000.
But what if effort isn’t what’s missing?
What if your body is asking for something completely different?
That’s where Test. Don’t Guess. became such an important part of how I work.
Because two women can both come to me saying:
“I’ve gained 20 pounds and I’m exhausted.”
And the reasons can be completely different.
Same symptoms.
Different bodies.
Different needs.
That’s why generic advice becomes so frustrating.
Maybe You Don’t Need to Try Harder
Maybe that’s what I want you to take from this.
You don’t need another Monday where you promise yourself you’re going to “be good.”
You don’t need another app telling you to eat less.
You don’t need to punish yourself with a workout because your jeans were tight this morning.
And you definitely don’t need another year of collecting random health tips hoping one finally works.
You need to understand what’s happening in your body.
Because I don’t just want you to lose 15 pounds.
I want you to pull out your fall clothes and know they’ll fit.
I want you standing confidently in the family photo instead of volunteering to take it.
I want you saying yes to Saturday night without spending Saturday morning upset because you have “nothing to wear.”
I want you finishing your workday with enough energy left to actually have a life afterward.
I want you to feel strong.
I want you to feel confident being seen.
I want you having sex with the lights on if that’s what you want.
Most of all?
I want you to stop spending so much damn time thinking about your body.
You want to feel like yourself again.
And I believe that starts by understanding the body you’re living in now.
Test. Understand. Transform.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why don’t I feel like myself after 40?
There may not be one single reason. Hormonal changes during perimenopause can affect sleep, energy, mood, libido and body composition, while stress, nutrition, digestion, inflammation and other health conditions can also contribute. Looking at your symptoms together can help you better understand what may be happening.
Why is my body changing after 40 even though I haven’t changed anything?
Your hormones, muscle mass, stress response, sleep and insulin sensitivity can all change as you get older. That means the nutrition and exercise strategies that worked for you ten years ago may not be what your body needs today.
Is weight gain after 40 always caused by hormones?
No. Hormones can contribute, but sleep, stress, nutrition, muscle mass, blood sugar, medications and other health factors can also play a role. Persistent or unexplained symptoms should always be discussed with your healthcare provider.
